Weeks 5 & 6: Drivers of Organizational Success - Strategic Modeling is Fun!
Please remember that there is NO CLASS on Monday, Sept. 30, but Homework is due On Wednesday, October 2nd. The following highlights study and research expectations for the next couple of weeks.
Your assignment last week was as follows- By NEXT WEEK, please have reviewed pages 37-50 of Flawless Consulting. This is CHAPTER 3.
Last week our activities involved much of what Block has offered in the first 3 Chapters. We have made initial contact, determined a reasonable approach, which brings us up to Chapter 4, The Contracting Overview, and Chapter 5, The Contracting Meeting. Your homework for the next two weeks is:
Week Five – read ALL of Chapter 4
Week Six – read ALL of Chapter 5
As you read, think of your role as an independent consultant to the Old Warsaw Brewery.
Due on Wednesday, October 2nd – Deliver to me, that day, a hard copy reflective paper describing your skills, strengths, and gifts in relation to what you read in Chapters 3 and 4. Simply put, answer the following:
- Based on my readings of these chapters, I am confident that I am able to (list three or more skills/tasks essential to the consultant “toolkit.”). Example: In Chapter 4, Peter Block describes the importance of the word “contract” in the consulting world. When I read his narrative, I understood how important this language is to the relationship I will try to have with my clients. In fact, it’s my nature to come to agreements when working as part of a team and negotiating everyone’s roles. Block’s descriptions formalize what I am already used to doing, enabling me to put what I do in a useful framework I can apply anywhere.
- I am less confident in my ability to (list three areas you feel less capable). Be sure to be very clear regarding the sections of your readings that relate to what you perceive as “deficits.” Example: “Kelly Graves, in his talk, mentioned how he checked up with the client months later to see how his advice might have helped. Peter Block cites this as optional and helpful in Chapter 4, page 64. It sounds like a good idea, but what should I do if the client is critical of my work, after the fact? How would I deal with that situation?
Of course, you will have your own list of items you need support in understanding, but you have the idea.

These points of study highlight differences in the consulting “tiers” we have read about. There are many ways to be a successful consultant, and you may well be operating as one now.
I am anticipating that we will go from here, to discussion of contracting challenges, and the importance of developing coaching skills to help others help us give them the support they need and want to take their organizations to the next level.
