It’s great to see our students’ eager faces that first day of classes, right?

As the semester rolls out, the challenge of maintaining that enjoyable, positive learning climate intensifies.  David Agoff has organized an outstanding meeting to energize us for the start of the Fall Semester.  Typically, this meeting has been aimed at helping new faculty to become familiar with their roles at the College of Business. This semester, our “new” instructors are experienced, so the focus is on collaboration for all of us. David emailed us invitations, highlighting what we’ll get in exchange for a few hours of time:

1.  Additional knowledge and skills to assist us in the new semester - and the future

2.  Meet new COB instructors and reconnect with those we  know

3.  Collaborate with other COB instructors and share ideas and "best practices"

4.  Learn about the valuable resources available to us and to our students

5.  Enjoy an opportunity to ask any questions we have

6.  Receive free beakfast and lunch

7.  Have some fun!

 The meeting – which is August 18, 8:30 a.m., Glenn 306—inspired me to make a new connection to some vintage material.

The Eighth Habit of Highly Effective Educators (Behind Each Link is a Little Gift)

Stephen Covey’s  The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People inspired many to adopt habits enabling them to do their best work, even under the most daunting conditions. Covey followed this book with The Eighth Habit, encouraging readers to “Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs.”

Educators are pathfinders and guides. Exploring our shared challenges as educators enables us to move ahead with a bit more energy, perhaps encouraging us to take a few risks by doing things differently along the way.  Covey recommends that we stay focused on priorities, and

 “…{Not} get sidetracked by matters that aren’t central to your core purpose. To get focus and teamwork, employees must know what the highest    priorities are, buy into them, translate them into specific actions, have the discipline to stay the course, trust one another and collaborate effectively.”

As David says, “We have to be able to take care of ourselves first to bring the attitude that helps us connect to our students. There are techniques to help us do that in the first five minutes of class, and it can make a big difference throughout the semester. We all have ideas about building positive cultures and this meeting will help to open more of that kind of discussion.”   Remember to join us on Friday, August 18, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Glenn 306!

Jim Morgan:  Another Important Resource

 

Jim’s involved in a novel program that could prove invaluable to those who need it. 

Now beginning its second year, the University Ombuds program is a resource for staff, faculty, and students. Program visitors may be facing significant health, family, or other issues. Recognizing that sometimes our personal and work lives become intertwined, Ombuds listen in a confidential setting and assist in all ways possible.
